Battista Island Shortcut through Hogue Channel

The Battista Island shortcut is a new way for boaters to get from Bonita up to new pass just South of Estero. Currently, it’s a slow go through no wake zones all the way up through Estero Bay under Estero Boulevard and out to the Gulf of Mexico but the Battista Island shortcut has made the commute much faster up through Hogue Channel and big Hickory pass.

After boaters had north out of Estero Bay they can follow the channel into the idle speed zone along homes and waterfront docks. The buffering between Hogue Channel and Estero Bay is where the locals start their shortcut.

The manager of the Bonita Bay Marina says that boaters need to know where the tide is and depending on what size boat they have they can either take the shortcut or not. Specific PVC markers will help guide boats through deeper waters and their tall enough with reflective green tape to notify boaters whether boats of 33 feet or smaller and a 2 foot draft can take the shortcut depending on outboard motors or inboard.

“It is a blind corner” says the manager, “so use a horn and slow down making a wider turn so it notifies oncoming boaters”. Lee County has stated they will never mark the channel with common red or green channel markers because they will only mark safe water and even though both can typically make it there’s deeper water in Hogue Channel and marked channels show boaters the deepest water.

Spring Creek can’t get shallow in certain places but Lee County marks the best water for deeper boats.

Most of the homes that would utilize this feature are nestled along Hickory Boulevard. There’s a variety of estates, condominiums and resorts along Hickory Boulevard that allow for boat access and docks. These homes typically range from about $300,000-$5 million depending on size and condition.
