Dispute over the Border of Estero and Bonita Springs
Dispute over the Border of Estero and Bonita Springs – Can’t figure out where to live? It seems that the mayor of Bonita Springs and Estero can’t figure it out either. Both are in a dispute over the border of Estero and Bonita Springs and where one city actually ends and the other begins.
Mayor Ben Nelson along with community leaders can’t see eye to eye when it comes to where the border should be. Mayor Nelson has requested that people living in a 2 mile buffer zone between Estero and Bonita Springs should be able to choose which city they actually want to reside in. Although the issue is not whether the unincorporated part of Estero should be a city or not it can put residents in a confusing dilemma. The Estero Council of Community Leaders say they are not conceding to Bonita Springs after the push to move forward with plans that will incorporate these properties within the city of Bonita Springs.
This is a 2 mile buffer zone between Bonita Springs and the unincorporated parts of Estero and includes high-value properties such as Coconut Point Mall and the proposed Hertz headquarters. In the past Bonita Springs proposed an agreement not to annex this area for five years after becoming a city which ended in 2004. At this point Bonita Springs Mayor Nelson feels that is now legally there right to annex this part of the County.
Another twist is that the state ultimately determines where the boundary lines are drawn but Estero must be granted a charter in order to do so. Regardless of the turnout both sides are hoping for a compromise before the state must step in and make the final decision.
The Bonita Springs the City Council has been discussing this and also will take a vote as to the outcome for the Preserve at Pelican Landing and the Coconut Point Marina. [Source]
